Progress Energy, Pantry make Fortune 500

Progress Energy and The Pantry were once again the only two Triangle-area companies to make the Fortune 500, the business magazine said Monday.
Progress Energy's 2007 revenue of $10.71 billion put the Raleigh utility (NYSE: PGN) at No. 248 on Fortune's list, down slightly from 238th in 2007. And The Pantry (Nasdaq: PTRY), a gas station and convenience store chain based in Sanford, came in at No. 405 with $6.02 billion in 2007 sales.
A year ago, the company was 436th on Fortune's list.

Fortune's annual list of the biggest companies in America is based on 2007 revenue. The full list will appear in the magazine's April 28 print edition and is online now atwww.fortune.com.
Another three Triangle-based companies made the Fortune 1,000 - an expanded version of the magazine's 500-company list.
Cary-based Yellow Pages publisher R.H. Donnelley (NYSE: RHD) was 732nd with revenue of $2.68 billion. Raleigh-based construction aggregates company Martin Marietta Materials (NYSE: MLM) was 835th with $2.21 billion in sales. And Alliance One International (NYSE: AOI), a tobacco distributor based in Morrisville, was No. 899 with revenue of $2 billion.
All three companies also were on last year's Fortune 1,000.
Some 26 companies based in North Carolina made the full Fortune 1,000 list. Charlotte-based Bank of America (NYSE: BAC) topped its Tar Heel brethren, coming in at No. 9 with $119.19 billion in revenue. Another bank, Charlotte's Wachovia (NYSE: WB), was No. 38 with $55.53 billion in sales, and Mooresville home retailer Lowe's (NYSE: LOW) was No. 48 with $48.28 billion in revenue.
Topping the overall list was Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT), with 2007 revenue of $378.8 billion.
