Regions only Alabama company to make Fortune 500

Regions Financial Corp. ranked No. 245 on this year's Fortune 500 list, the sole Alabama company that made the list.

The Birmingham-based banking giant, which merged with AmSouth Bancorp., jumped 67 spots this year with revenues of $10.7 billion and $1.2 billion in earnings for 2007. That compares to revenues of $7.7 billion the year before.

The bank was also the only Alabama company to rank on the Fortune 500 list last year.

Four other Alabama companies made the Fortune 1000 list: Vulcan Materials at No. 620 with $3.3 billion in revenues; Protective Life Corp. at No. 665 with $3 billion in revenues; HealthSouth Corp. at No. 796 with $2.3 billion in revenues and Montgomery-based Colonial BancGroup at No. 964 with $1.7 billion in revenues.
