"(Capitol Federal's) financial commitment provides the opportunity to enhance Sandstone in creating an all-new concert experience to meet the social conscious awareness and philosophy of the world today" Chris Fritz, president of New West Presentations, said in a release Tuesday. Fritz is overseeing upgrades to the Bonner Springs venue.

John Dicus, CEO of Topeka-based Capitol Federal (Nasdaq: CFFN), said in the release that the sponsorship is "an opportunity to foster awareness and education about green initiatives that will impact the local and global environment for years to come."

The Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kan., ratified a two-year contract with Sandstone, and the amphitheater's staff has been making changes to create environmentally friendly walkways, seating, stage plazas and concession areas, and to improve Sandstone's layout.

The amphitheater opened in 1984 as the Sandstone Center for the Performing Arts. It will start concerts in June.
