CalPERS chief investment officer resigns

Russell Read, chief investment officer of the $244 billion-asset California Public Employees' Retirement System, announced he will step down from his post effective June 30.

Read took the top investing spot at CalPERS in June 2006, after working in investing for Deutsche Asset Management and Scudder Investments, as well as having held senior investment positions with OppenhiemerFunds, Prudential Insurance and First Chicago.

Read plans to pursue his passion in organic chemistry, clean technology and environmental investing.

Read has retained his position as socio-economic adviser for the Forest BioProducts Research Project at the University of Maine, which seeks to find economical and environmentally sustainable fuels from wood products.

The CalPERS board will discuss steps for finding a new chief investment officer at an upcoming meeting.
