Union officials have extended contract talks through the weekend with General Motors Corp., avoiding for now a strike at GM's Fairfax Assembly Plant.

Union employees at the Fairfax plant warned General Motors (NYSE: GM) in a letter April 18that a strike was imminent unless progress was made toward getting a new contract. The prior contract expired in September.

Local 31 has about 2,600 members.

The Fairfax Assembly Plant ranks No. 15 on the Kansas City Business Journal's list area private-sector employers, with 2,700 employees. The plant makes the Chevy Malibu and Saturn Aura, and hybrid versions of each.
