Trinity University's listener supported radio station KRTU 91.7 has made the switch to a high-definition digital format.

The conversion was made possible through a $5 million technology grant furnished by the AT&T Foundation, the philanthropic organization of San Antonio-based AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T).

AT&T Director of External Affairs Jim Jamison says the company is proud to show its continued support for Trinity's students through this grant.

"The university has been able to stay ahead of the curve and become the first public radio station in San Antonio to convert to digital," he says. "This change is not only beneficial for listeners but also coincides with both Trinity University and AT&T's education mission to create an engaging and cutting-edge learning environment for students."

KRTU officials renovated their main and auxiliary studios, installed state-of-the-art equipment that is networked on a digital mainframe and began broadcasting on a digital transmitter.

"Everything is digitally integrated in a way that it never was before," says Aaron Prado, music director for KRTU. "It transformed the station."

KRTU offers jazz programming in San Antonio. The conversion to high-definition digital also opens up the possibility for the station to begin broadcasting additional channels.

Trinity also used the money from the $5 million grant to create an information commons area in the Coates University Library, an update of technology equipment in classrooms on campus and an upgrade of the school's television facilities to digital technology.
