A Boston company has acquired energy advisory firm South River Consulting LLC.

EnerNOC Inc. (NASDAQ: ENOC) will purchase Baltimore's South River for $3 million in cash and approximately $1.75 million in stock.

South River has worked with University of Maryland Medical System, Johns Hopkins Hospital, Loyola College, Domino Sugar, Becton Dickinson (NYSE: BDX), GSA Capital Region Area and the City of Baltimore on energy purchases and contracts.

EnerNOC's main technology monitors energy usage in structures and directs energy efficiency and demand management programs.

The move marks EnerNOC's continued expansion into the energy advisory services market.

The company has also begun providing consulting services for clients looking to manage energy purchases, but the acquisition of South River gives the company a strong foothold in the advisory market.
