Medical device and pacemaker manufacturer Medtronic Inc. is axing 97 jobs at its Tempe production center.

Minneapolis-based Medtronic (NYSE: MDT) is cutting 1,100 of its 39,500 employees companywide. The company is consolidating operations and shifting some manufacturing offshore including Mexico. Medtronic has a medical device manufacturing plant in Tijuana and also has operations in Mexico City.

The biomedical company told the Phoenix Business Journal in March that it has 1,250 employees in the Valley. That makes it the third-largest biomedical employer in the region, behind the Mayo Clinic and Sonora Quest Laboratories.

Medtronic reported the cuts to the state. Company officials did not respond to a request for comment Friday morning.

Federal law requires employees to report substantial layoffs and facility closures to impacted states.

The Arizona Department of Economic Security received layoff notices from 32 businesses (including Medtronic) and other employers during April, totaling 1,645 job eliminations.
