Jefferson Community & Technical College will break ground Friday morning on a $25.6 million Nursing and Allied Health building on the downtown Louisville campus, at Second Street and Broadway.

The three-story building, which was funded by the 2006 General Assembly, will be the first new building for the campus in 30 years.

The 100,000-square-foot building will house the college's 16 nursing and allied health programs and will serve about 3,500 students a year. It will contain classrooms, labs, faculty offices, meeting rooms and study space.

Construction is expected to begin in early June, with a target date for completion of spring 2010.

The downtown site is the largest of Jefferson's five campuses, which serve a total enrollment of 15,500.
