Pittsburgh casino operator Don Barden asked for and received a postponement of a planned public hearing on financing for his proposed Majestic Star Casino, a spokesman for the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board said Wednesday.

Barden's company, PITG Gaming LLC, filed the motion for the delay late Tuesday, gaming board spokesman Richard McGarvey said.

In the motion, Barden requested more time to negotiate terms of the lending package. PITG Gaming spokesman Bob Oltmanns did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Barden is planning to build a $600 million casino on Pittsburgh's North Shore and has said it will be operating by May 2009.

Barden's original plan as approved by the gaming board was for a facility that would have cost about $450 million. His project has been delayed by increases in construction costs and changes in his financing.

The hearing was to take place at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Mercer County, but Barden's lawyers asked for and received an extension, McGarvey said.

No future hearing date was announced, McGarvey said.
