An Iowa-based fishing equipment company that's one of the leaders in its field will consolidate its distribution centers in a $16 million warehouse near Kansas City International Airport, the Economic Development Corp. of Kansas City's directors heard on Friday.

As reported in the Kansas City Business Journal's May 16 edition, Pure Fishing Inc. will employ about 80 people in a 400,000-square-foot building the Spirit Lake, Iowa, company hopes to open in October. These jobs' annual average starting pay is $28,750.

Pure Fishing also had considered St. Louis; Columbia, S.C.; Louisville; and Reno, Nev.

The warehouse, one of the largest of its kind in Kansas City, will be built at SkyPort Business Park at 7501 NW 106th Terrace.

The site will be in a designated Foreign Trade Zone, and the new employment will trigger Enhanced Enterprise Zone tax credits from Missouri. The project's eventual work force of 112 and investment also will qualify it for state incentives.

Pure Fishing will consolidate warehouses in Iowa, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and near Toronto. The company's brands include Shakespeare and Abu Garcia rods and reels, and Stren and Trilene fishing line.

The EDC on Friday also announced three business expansions:

  • Dermadoctor Inc. will move its headquarters and distribution center by the fall to a building the skin products company bought at 1901 McGee St. The project's budget is $4 million.

The company will retain 21 jobs and expects to add 73 during the next 10 years. The city will abate property taxes for 10 years on improvements to the now-vacant former car dealership where Demadoctor plans to move.

  • Alpine Litho-Graphics Inc. will spend $1.8 million buying and outfitting a building at 8640 Troost Ave. The 29,000-square-foot structure is triple the size of the commercial printer's current leased space at 1040 E. 85th St.

The company will add eight jobs to its 24-person work force.

Missouri will provide $51,878 in Enhanced Enterprise Zone tax credits for new jobs paying an average of $31,000. Kansas City will abate property taxes on Alpine's investment by 50 percent for 10 years.

  • Indigo Wild will spend $1.5 million to buy a building at 3125 Wyandotte St. Move-in is planned for July. The body- and home-products manufacturer expects to add 10 full-time and 33 part-time jobs in the next five years. Pay for full-time positions will average $40,250.

Missouri could provide as much as $65,523 in Enhanced Enterprise Zone Tax Credits during the next five years. Indigo Wild also is eligible for a 10-year, 50-percent property tax abatement on its building investment.
