Kroger Co. stores nationwide will now offer its gas discount program, the grocery chain said Thursday.

The program gives Kroger Plus shopping card holders a discount of 10 cents per gallon for every $100 they spend at the grocer, and those using a branded Kroger credit card receive a 15 cents per-gallon discount.

Kroger (NYSE: KR) is the No. 1 grocer in metro Atlanta with a market share of 31.6 percent, according to The Shelby Report, which tracks the grocery industry. Kroger operates 131 stores in metro Atlanta.

Most of the grocer's stores had offered discount programs, but they weren't interconnected between regions, so a traveling customer wouldn't be able to get the discount at its stores elsewhere.

The expanded program does exclude a few markets, including Columbus, Ohio, and Michigan, where other special discounts apply.

Cincinnati-based Kroger operates more than 2,400 supermarkets and multi-department stores in 31 states.
