The H.J. Heinz Co. plans to rely on potato peels and green tomatoes to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent over the next seven years, the company said Tuesday.
The plan calls for the Downtown-based company (NYSE:HNZ) to reduce energy consumption and packaging, and make its transporataion network more efficient. Heinz plans to convert potato peels into biofuel at its Ontario, Ore., facility, and to expand its tomato-growing regions into China, Egypt and eastern Europe, in order to produce more local sources of tomatoes, reducing tomato transportation costs -- increasing "green" tomato production.
