Midwest Airlines is discontinuing service to San Antonio International Airport as of this fall as part as a restructuring of the carrier’s flights nationwide.

The new schedule goes into effect Sept. 8. The Milwaukee-based airline’s schedule retains service to 32 cities. In addition, through a code sharing agreement with Northwest Airlines Corp., Midwest is adding more than 100 new city pairs to the program.

Midwest first began that relationship with Eagan, Minn.-based Northwest (NYSE: NWA) in late 2007.

Midwest Airlines officials are blaming record-high fuel prices and the company’s previously announced plan to ground its 12-plane MD-80 fleet of aircraft as reasons for the restructuring. Earlier this month, Midwest Airlines and its Skyway subsidiary laid off 1,200 employees, or 40 percent of its workforce.

“We will remain true to our mission of serving major business destinations with more nonstop flights from Milwaukee than any other airline,” says Chairman and CEO Timothy E. Hoeksema.

Passengers affected by route or schedule changes will be notified by Midwest if the tickets were purchased through the company’s reservations center or Web site or by their travel agency. The new post-Sept. 8 schedule is posted online at www.midwestairlines.com.

Midwest Airlines is owned by Midwest Air Group Inc.
