Pervasive Software Inc.'s profit fell in the most-recent quarter despite an increase in revenue, due largely to a one-time gain a year ago.

The data management software company earned $800,000, or 4 cents a share, in its fiscal fourth quarter that ended in June. That's down from a profit of $1.9 million, or 9 cents a share, during the same period a year ago. The company says its profits were inflated in the 2007 quarter by a one-time tax benefit.

Pervasive's (Nasdaq: PVSW) revenue increased 9 percent over the same quarter in 2007 to $11.2 million. The company credited new product version releases and improved execution of its core product lines for the revenue hike.

Pervasive's stock was up on Wednesday afternoon, trading around $4.35 a share, a nearly 10 percent increase from Tuesday's close.

For the full 2008 fiscal year, pervasive earned $3 million, or 15 cents a share, compared with earnings of $4 million, or 19 cents a share, in fiscal 2007.

The company's fiscal year revenue totaled $42.5 million, a 4 percent increase over the $40.8 million logged for the previous fiscal year.

Pervasive says its database products continue to generate about two-thirds of its revenue while its integration products make up the balance.

John Farr, president and CEO of Pervasive, says the company's solid financial performance is enabling it to grow and continue investing in new innovations. In the last year, Pervasive has added 40 people to its local staff for a total of 205 in Austin. The company employs 219 worldwide.
