United Airlines will increase its fee for baggage checked at the airport by $5.

The fee increase does not apply to baggage checked in and paid for online.

The policy takes effect June 10 for tickets bought beginning Thursday, May 14. The fee will not be charged for tickets bought before May 14 even on flights after June 10.

The increase brings the Chicago-based airline's baggage fee to $20 for the first piece of airport-checked luggage and $30 for the second piece. Fees for online-checked luggage remain $15 and $25 respectively.

According to aWall Street Journal report, United's goal is to encourage online check-in of baggage as a way to reduce workload for airport employees, speed up flow through terminals and reduce costs.

US Airways instituted a similar policy last month. It applies to tickets bought after April 22 and takes effect on July 9.

United serves customers in central New Mexico from the Albuquerque International Sunport.
