Women Business Owners Forge Full Speed Ahead In Tough Economic Times

Entrepreneur and the Women Presidents’ Organization Name Top 50 Fastest-Growing Women-Owned/Led Companies

(Irvine, CA) October 28, 2008Entrepreneur magazine, in partnership with the Women Presidents’ Organization (WPO), released its second ranking of the 50 fastest-growing women-led companies across the nation and Canada. The Top 50 generated a combined $3.6 billion in 2007 sales alone (up from $1 billion in 2003), and are each managing to build growth in the midst of a difficult and ever-changing economy.

Spartan Contractors LLC, a heavy industrial contractor business and the fastest-growing company on the list, exemplifies the vitality of businesses led by women today. The company’s owner, Heidi Smith Price, expects 2008 sales to hit $150 million, a mammoth leap from just $100,000 in 2003.

The number-two company on the list is Pinnacle Technical Resources Inc. (an IT staffing firm), and Temporary Housing Directory Inc. is listed next in third place. Collectively, the Top 50 demonstrates the variety of women-led companies as well as the breadth of products and services they offer, including translation services, metal recycling, education technology integration, general contracting, and dog day camps.

“The companies on our Top 50 list underscore the dynamism of women business owners today,” says Amy Cosper, VP/editor-in-chief at Entrepreneur. “They highlight the entrepreneurship fundamental to our nation’s economy. These businesses, and the women leading them, are continuing to create jobs and opportunities critical to our overall economic security. We’re proud to be recognizing their achievements.”

“We are most pleased to have worked with Entrepreneur magazine for a second year to recognize the list of the Top 50 fastest-growing women-owned/led businesses in North America,” says Marsha Firestone, Ph. D., president and founder of the WPO. “Once again the list illustrates the important impact women business owners have on the economy and employment, and it continues to confirm their innovative approaches to fast growth.”

To be eligible for the ranking, the Top 50 companies were required to be privately held, woman-led businesses in the U.S. or Canada and have reached revenue of at least $1 million in 2007. All eligible companies were ranked according to a sales growth formula that combined percentage and absolute growth. From this list, the Top 50 were selected.

All 50 companies will be honored at a special event with the WPO in New York City on December 4, 2008. The awards reception will take place from 6pm to 8pm at the Carlyle Hotel. To learn more about each of the fastest-growing women-led companies, visit http://www.entrepreneur.com/women50.
