IBM ranked among top 50 companies for diversity

DiversityInc magazine has named IBM, Wachovia and Bank of America to its list of the nation's top 50 companies for diversity.

Charlotte-based BofA (NYSE:BAC) is No. 3 on the list, while its Queen City competitor Wachovia (NYSE:WB) is No. 14. IBM (NYSE: IBM) comes in at No. 9.

Last year, BofA ranked first, and Wachovia was No. 11. IBM, which has 11,000 Triangle employees, last made the magazine's list in 2004.

A 10-year-old publication that began online and started a print magazine in 2002, DiversityInc tracks diversity in the workplace. Its rankings are derived from corporate responses to questions regarding their chief executives' commitment to increasing diversity within the labor force, training, and diversity among suppliers.

New York-based Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ) topped the list, followed by The Coca-Cola Co. (NYSE:KO) of Atlanta.
