Blaming economic conditions, the company said in a prepared release the Orchard Park site was ???substantially??? under capacity and was affecting its cost position and earnings.
???The current economic condition has negatively impacted Midmark, as it has many businesses,??? said Anne Eiting Klamar, president and CEO. ???This was not an easy decision to make, but after careful consideration, we believe that it is the best thing to do for the long-term security of Midmark and its teammates.
In November of last year Midmark announced the sale of its dental nitrous oxide product line to Parker Hannifin Corp. (NYSE: PH), which relocated the operation from Orchard Park to Hatfield, Pa. Terms of the agreement for the product line, which had about $7 million in sales, were not disclosed. That deal did not include any job losses at Midmark, a company official said.
The official said some employees may relocate to the Versailles facility, and the company will provide outplacement resources to all staffers affected.
At the time, the company said the local site would continue to manufacture a growing range of dental and veterinary products.
According to the Dayton Business Journal, a sister publication to Business First, Midmark posts more than $200 million in annual revenue and has seen double digit growth in recent years. The company, with 1,100 employees nationwide, focused on health care manufacturing of chairs, furniture and equipment and expanded in recent years into the dental and veterinary lines.
The company entered the Western New York market in 2004, with the acquisition of Matrix Medical Inc. The Orchard Park facility sold for $1.8 million.
