Lake Coatepeque. Next to the Santa Ana volcano, Lake Coatepeque is about an hour and a half trip from the capital. It was formed from a crater more than 35,000 years ago and takes its name from the Nahuatl word qoatepeq, which means "valley of serpents." Today, the lake offers a perfect place to fish, ride a waterbike or take a boat ride. There is also good scuba diving.
