DR. SOFTWARE UNVEILS "DR. FRAME 3D" STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS.

CAD/CAM Update • April 1, 2004 •

Dr. Frame 3D, a structural analysis tool that offers direct manipulation and real time instant feedback for modeling three-dimensional structures, is now available from Dr. Software, LLC, Seattle, Wash. The new software runs on Windows and Macintosh platforms, and sells for $899 US.

Better Designs Faster

The finite element based software was developed to assist architects and civil, aeronautical, construction and mechanical engineers make better designs in less time by providing a level of interaction not previously available in a structural analysis environment. Dr. Frame 3D hides the complexity of number crunching functions, freeing the designer to focus on model behavior. The software combines into one what are usually three separate functions - model definition, model analysis and results generation.

Small framed building with axial force intensity coloring enabled

These abilities enable structure designers to try out "what if" scenarios, testing ideas in minutes rather than hours. Models can be modified on the fly and they will accurately respond to changes both visually and numerically. Alternatives can be explored simply by entering values or by grabbing objects and moving them around.

"We see modeling and analysis as part of a larger communication process, in which results and observations need to be discussed, explained and understood, as well as produced," said Dr. Michael Rucki, a founder and manager at Dr. Software. "Our goal is to make the modeling process more convenient and intelligible, to make the model behavior as transparent to the user as possible. We believe this will lead to better understanding which leads to better designs."

Improved Analysis Through Visualization

Dr. Frame 3D is used primarily for frame and truss structures made of steel, concrete and wood. It performs linear and nonlinear analysis; allows interactive manipulation of loads, supports and members; and updates displacements, moments and design checks, all in real time. These functions are presented through a powerful yet simple interface that seamlessly integrates analysis with graphical representation.

The direct manipulation tool is also useful for collaboration and presentation needs. Its pictorial nature and ease of use enables clients, managers and engineering students to quickly grasp concepts and understand the effects of structural modifications.

Early user, Angelo Mattacchione, president of Prosum Engineering Ltd., explained, "We see Dr. Frame 3D as a next generation product. It does what structural analysis software should do, by allowing you to concentrate on behavior and design, as opposed to input and bookkeeping tasks. And because creation and modifications to models are quick and easy, it makes the study of multiple what-if scenarios feasible without taxing constraints, resulting in a better overall design."

Price & System Requirements

Dr. Frame 3D is available now for commercial applications at $899 US. Educational license is $99. The software can be ordered and downloaded at http://www.drsoftware-home.com. An online demo is available on request. For more information, call 206/930-5828 or email info@drsoftware-home.com.

Dr. Frame 3D supports Microsoft Windows 95 and up, as well as Apple Macintosh 8.6 and up, including OS X. Native format is XML, making files easy to inspect on Web browsers. Files can also be imported as DXF from AutoCAD applications.
