Tough talks.(Panorama)(negotiations for contract)(Brief Article)

Royal Ahold sold its Peruvian and Chilean supermarket chains Supermercados Santa Isabel, as well as its Paraguay operations Supermercados Stock, as part of a company plan to exit South America and reduce its debt of approximately US$13 billion. But the Dutch retailer is having a harder time ridding itself of its Argentine supermarket chain Disco. Despite continued negotiations throughout 2003, Ahold was unable to seal a deal with Chile's Cencosud. Now, Ahold is giving it another shot with different buyers. In late December, it began exclusive negotiations with independent Argentine investor Francisco de Narvaez and Franch retailer Casino Guichard-Perrachon.
