FRIST NAMES PENSION CONFEREES, AGREES DEMOCRATS WILL PARTICIPATE.

Liability & Insurance Week • Feb 17, 2004 •

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (D-TN) Feb. 12 named Sens. Charles E. Grassley (R-IA), Judd Gregg (R-NH), Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Max Baucus (D-MT) and Edward Kennedy (D-MA) as conferees on H.R. 3108, the pension funding bill.

Before receiving unanimous consent to name the conferees, however, Frist had to assure Senate Minority Leader Thomas Daschle Democrats would be allowed to participate fully in conference negotiations.

Daschle had been objecting to the naming of the conferees since Jan. 28 on grounds the Republicans refused to let Democrats participate in the conferences on the new Medicare law and the stalled energy bill.
