Latin Americans living abroad sent a record US$38 billion to friends and family back home during 2003, or $6 billion more than they did a year earlier. Those payments, known as remittances, inject more money into the region than foreign direct investment and development financing combined. Remittances are a big boost to countries like Nicaragua, where they account for 30% of total economic output.
