Executive suite: At American Community Newspapers LLC of
Minneapolis, Scott Wright has been named group publisher in charge of
the company's 14 papers in North Texas; previously Wright was
general manager of the Oakland Press in Michigan. Wright began his
career at the Daily Reporter in Greenfield, Ind., and worked as an
advertising executive with the Evansville Courier and Press, the Joplin
Globe and was corporate advertising director for Ottaway Newspapers.
Before joining the Press, Wright was vice president and chief operating
officer of the Suburban Journals of St. Louis. ... At Block
Communications Inc. of Toledo, Ohio (The Blade, Pennsylvania's
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette), Allan Block has been named chairman;
previously he was the company's managing director. Additionally,
Block will continue as chairman of the family-owned company's cable
television and broadcast divisions. Block replaces his cousin, William
Block Jr., who will remain on the company's board of directors and
its executive committee. ...
Georgia on my mind: At the Savannah Morning News, Julian Miller has
been named publisher; previously he was president of the Augusta
Chronicle, also of Georgia (both are Morris Publishing papers). Miller
has been at the Chronicle for 24 years -- he joined the paper as city
editor and rose through the ranks to become assistant managing editor,
assistant general manager and general manager; he's been president
since 2002. Earlier in his career, Miller was a reporter and editor at
Georgia's Valdosta Daily Times and managing editor of the
Thomasvile Times-Enterprise. Taking Miller's position at the
Chronicle will be Don Bailey, the paper's general manager since
2002. Bailey joined Morris in 1992 as classified manager of the
Chronicle and moved to the Morning News as ad director in 1996. He
started his career as an advertising intern at the Macon Telegraph. ...
Publishers: At the Daily Iowegian in Centerville, Becky Maxwell has
been named publisher; previously she was the paper's general
manager. A Centerville native, Maxwell's entire nine-year
newspaper career has been at the Iowegian, where she has worked mostly
in sales. ... At The Herald of Circleville, Ohio, Steve Davies has been
named publisher; most recently he was retail sales manager of the
Columbus Dispatch. A 20-year newspaper veteran, Davies has worked at
papers in Connecticut and Ohio. ... At Kansas' Augusta Daily
Gazette, Len Hudson has been named publisher; he will continue as
publisher of the nearby El Dorado Times. An Augusta native, Hudson
started with the paper at age 12 as a carrier. He worked at papers in
Fredonia and Pratt before returning to the Gazette as advertising
manager in the 1980s. ... At The Times of Northwest Indiana, in
suburban Gary, Kevin Mowbray has been named publisher; previously he
was vice president of sales and marketing at Lee Enterprises Inc. and
he will remain a vice president of Lee in his new job. In 18 years with
Lee, Mowbray has worked at papers in Illinois, Montana and Nebraska,
and as national sales manager for corporate sales and marketing in
Chicago. Most recently he was publisher of the Bismarck Tribune in
North Dakota between 2000 and 2002. ...
Front office: At the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Alex Taylor has
been named vice president and business manager; previously he was with
the paper's automotive ad group. Earlier in his career, Taylor was
a reporter and editor at Texas' Austin American-Statesman and the
Daily Sentinel in Grand Junction, Colo. ... At The Advocate-Messenger
in Danville, Ky., Scott Schurz Jr. has been named assistant publisher;
previously he was manager of special publications for Indiana's
South Bend Tribune. Earlier in his career, Schurz was a sports writer
at The Herald-Times in Bloomington, Ind., and a sales executive at
Associated Desert Shoppers in Palm Desert, Calif. (all are Schurz
Communications Inc. papers). ... At the Miami Herald, Carlos Abaunza
has been named vice president for strategic planning; previously he was
vice president and controller of the paper's parent company,
Knight Ridder of San Jose. Earlier, Abaunza was vice president for
finance and chief financial officer of the paper. ... At Community
Newspaper Co. of Needham, Mass., Al Getler has been named vice
president of circulation; previously he was vice president of marketing
and circulation for the Newspaper Network of Central Ohio (The
Advocate, Newark, Times Recorder, Zanesville, et. al). Earlier, Getler
was a circulation executive at papers in Troy, N.Y., Atlantic City,
N.J., and Hackensack, N.J. ... At Minnesota's Austin Daily Herald,
Jason Schreiber has been named advertising director; previously he was
marketing manager at Kraus Foods of nearby Albert Lea. He is a native
of the area. ... At The Blade in Toledo, Ohio, Fred Temby has been
named advertising manager; previously he was executive vice president
and chief operating officer of the Newspaper Agency Corp. of Salt Lake
City. Earlier, Temby was an executive with Shurz Communications at
papers in Indiana and Maryland. ...
Indiana editors: At the Herald Bulletin of Anderson, Lisa Allen and
Ron Wilkins have been named managing editors. Previously, Allen had
been the paper's city editor and joined the paper in 2001;
she's a 20-year veteran of newspapers and magazines. Wilkins had
been the Herald Bulletin's night city editor and joined the paper
in 1992 and earlier had been a reporter and opinion page editor. ... At
the Noblesville Daily Times, Bob Hansen has been named editor;
previously he was op-ed editor at The Palladium-Item in Richmond, Ind.
Before joining the Richmond paper three years ago, Hansen and his wife
Pat Hansen owned the weekly Indiana paper, the Hagerstown Exponent. ...
At The Post-Tribune of suburban Gary, Paulette Haddix has been named
executive editor; previously she was deputy managing editor. A longtime
Post-Tribune employee, Haddix was the paper's metro editor and
served as a reporter, copy editor and bureau chief. ...
Editors: At Washingtonpost.com, James Brady has been named
executive editor; most recently he has been a consultant to the web
site. Brady, a longtime Washington Post sports reporter and copy
editor, was assistant managing editor of the web site from 1995 to
1998, spending the next five years at America Online in nearby Dulles,
Va., where he was vice president of production and operations,
executive director of editorial operations and group programming
director of news and sports. ...At The Post-Bulletin in Rochester,
Minn., Matt Merritt has been named managing editor; previously he was
managing editor of the Austin Daily Herald, also in Minnesota. Earlier
Merritt had been the Daily Herald's city and education reporter.
