When you have a small staff, it is important that your employees have confidence in your leadership capabilities. In a recent survey developed by Robert Half Management Resources, Menlo Park, California, 47 percent of employees said that they were very confident in their organizations' senior management, while 38 percent were somewhat confident. Paul McDonald, executive director of RHMR, notes that exemplary leaders build trust and confidence among employees by
* Recognizing their team. Leaders don't take all the credit for their successes. They acknowledge individual and team contributions on a regular basis.
* Rallying the troops. Leaders support their teams. They provide resources and inspiration to employees working toward a common goal.
* Seeking input. Successful leaders never go it alone. They appreciate the intelligence and experience of their staff and ask them for suggestions to improve the organization.
* Communicating vision. Influential leaders don't operate in a vacuum. To motivate and guide others, they demonstrate vision and communicate ideas clearly throughout the organization.
* Promoting a strong work ethic. The best leaders enjoy what they do. They work hard to meet business goals, achieve results, and foster a culture that maximizes employee performance.
