Journal, Calkins Media appoints Michael White, Frank Barrows of
Charlotte Observer resigns
Publisher: At the JournalNews of Hamilton, Ohio, and the nearby
Middletown Journal, Ann Hoffman has been named publisher; she will
continue as publisher of Cox Ohio's weekly newspapers. Earlier,
Hoffman was a deputy managing editor at the Dayton Daily News, which
she joined in 1994. Before Ohio, Hoffman did a 16-year stint in the
newsroom of The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, Va. ...
Executive suite: At Calkins Media of Levittown, Pa., Michael White
has been named vice president and chief financial officer; previously
he was vice president of finance for Journal Register Co.'s
Michigan papers and before JRC bought it, 21st Century Newspapers of
Pontiac, Mich. Also at Calkins, Thomas Spurgeon has been named vice
president of administration; previously he was general manager of the
company's Bucks County Courier Times and earlier was publisher of
The Herald-Standard in Uniontown, Pa. Lastly at Calkins, Bob Kellagher
has been named director of new business development; he will continue
to manage the company's PhillyBurbs.com regional web site. ...
Retiring types: At the Charlotte Observer in North Carolina, Frank
Barrows will leave his post as managing editor on May 13. Save a
four-year hiatus as a freelance writer, Barrows -- who started as a
sports reporter -- has been with the paper since 1967 and was named
managing editor in 1992. The 58-year-old editor has had long-term plans
to leave the paper this year. ... At the Goldsboro News-Argus in North
Carolina, Michael Rouse has retired. Starting as a reporter at the
News-Argus in the late 1950s, Rouse joined the Associated Press in 1961.
Following a decade-long career at the wire service, Rouse was named
managing editor of North Carolina's Durham Morning Herald, where
he spent 13 years. He also was an executive at North Carolina's
Washington Daily News and the Fayetteville Observer. ... At the Oak
Ridger of Oak Ridge, Tenn., John Miller has said he will retire at the
end of June. A 30-year newspaper veteran, Miller has worked for papers
in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, North Carolina and South
Carolina. ... At the Richmond Times-Dispatch in Virginia, William
Millsaps Jr. will retire July 1 as senior vice president and editor of
the paper. A 39-year veteran of the Times-Dispatch, Millsaps began at
the paper as a sports reporter in 1966 and was promoted through the
ranks to sports editor in 1977, managing editor in 1992 and executive
editor in 1994. ...
Editors: At Alabama's Decatur Daily, Scott Morris has been
named managing editor; previously he was the paper's city editor,
a job he'd held for 17 years. Morris started his career as a
reporter at the Hartselle Enquirer, also in Alabama, and moved to the
Decatur paper in 1987. ... At The Herald-Mail in Hagerstown, Md., Linda
Duffield has been named associate editor; previously she was the
managing editor of the Morning Herald and will be the No. Two person in
the two-paper newsroom. Duffield has been with The Herald-Mail since
1987 and has been managing editor of the a.m. operation since 1995.
Earlier, she did an eight-year stint with the Associated Press. Taking
Duffield's job at the a.m. paper will be Joel Huffer; previously
he was assistant managing editor. Except a period between 1999-2001,
Huffer has been with the paper 12 years. During his hiatus, Huffer was
with New York's Albany Times-Union. ... At Nebraska's
Columbus Telegram, James Dean has been named managing editor; most
recently he was editor of The Hour in Norwalk, Conn. Dean has had a
varied career, having worked as a photographer, reporter and editor at
papers in Cincinnati, Boise, Idaho, Fort Collins, Colo., and Waterbury,
Conn. ... At The Intelligencer in Doylestown, Pa., David Gilmartin has
been named managing editor; previously he was metro editor, a job
he'd held since 2003. Starting as a reporter at The Intelligencer
in 1985, Gilmartin left the paper in 1990 to become editor of the Times
Herald in Norristown, Pa., returning as assignment editor in 1999. ...
At the Mountain Press in Sevierville, Tenn., Stan Voit has been named
editor; previously he was managing editor of Alabama's Cullman
Times, a job he'd held for five years. In addition to Cullman,
Voit has worked at Alabama papers in Selma, Tuskegee, Tuscaloosa,
Prattville and Auburn, as well as Mississippi's Natchez Democrat.

Front office: At Indiana's South Bend Tribune, Steven Funk has
been named general manager; previously he was senior vice president and
general manager of a group of weeklies and shoppers in Michigan. Funk
started his newspaper career at Michigan's Battle Creek Enquirer
and was ad manager of The Post-Crescent in Appleton, Wis. ... At the
Chippewa Valley Newspapers Inc. of Chippewa Falls, Wis. (Chippewa
Herald, Dunn County News, et al.), Steve Jahn has been named
advertising director; he will remain publisher of the Dunn County News,
a job he's held since 1996. Earlier in his career, Jahn was an
advertising and circulation executive at Thomson's Wisconsin
Strategic Marketing Group in Wisconsin Rapids, Wis. ...
