NETGEAR(R), Inc. (NASDAQ:NTGR), Santa Clara, Calif., a worldwide
provider of technologically advanced, branded networking products, has
won Gold status in the 2005 Industrial Design Excellence Award (IDEA)
program, one of the world's most prestigious design competitions.
The 25-year-old award competition, sponsored by the Industrial Designers
Society of America (IDSA), is a celebration of the best product designs
of the year as judged by an international panel of design experts.
NETGEAR's Platinum II enclosure, the housing for over 20
popular NETGEAR networking devices, was one of only 38 Gold IDEA award
recipients from a pool of over 1,400 submissions in more than 50
categories for business, industrial, consumer, research, medical and
scientific markets. This is the second major design honor this year for
NETGEAR, as the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design
also bestowed its GOOD DESIGN(TM) Award on the Platinum II enclosure.
"This award has strengthened NETGEAR's reputation for
delivering innovation to the masses," said Patrick Lo, chairman and
CEO of NETGEAR. "Our feature-rich wired and wireless networking
products empower consumers to connect to the Internet with well designed
ease. We place considerable emphasis on affordable elegance when
developing our products, so it's highly rewarding to have the IDSA
acknowledge their artistic merit."
"The NETGEAR Platinum II enclosure is technology made
human," said Tucker Viemeister, jury chair of the IDSA. "The
vent details make this product feel like some kind of embroidered
plastic -- an intersection of craft and high technology. The cool metal
band presents the technology like a digital necklace. Its info-graphic
band shows that it's active in an elegant way."
The Platinum II series of NETGEAR's consumer and
business-class devices, designed in conjunction with NewDealDesign LLC,
comprises enclosures for nearly two dozen NETGEAR routers, gateways and
switches, including the 108 Mbps Wireless Firewall Router (model
WGT624), the 54 Mbps Wireless ADSL Firewall Router (DG834G), and the 54
Mbps Wireless Print Server with 4-Port Switch (WGPS606), as well as
wired devices such as the ADSL Modem Router (DG632) and the 8-Port
Gigabit Desktop Switch (GS608). The devices are distinctive for their
smooth interface, rounded corners, low profile, and lightly textured
white surface, with a side-wraparound overlay label in shiny chrome or
matte white. The Platinum II enclosure has also inspired the sleek
design of NETGEAR's newest wireless product family, including the
RangeMax(TM) Wireless Router (WPN824) with Smart MIMO technology.
"NETGEAR has given us the opportunity to develop an original
design that transcends the bland and beige typically associated with
products in the networking industry," said Gadi Amit, president of
NewDealDesign. "We took into consideration NETGEAR's emphasis
on providing simplified networking solutions for the home and business
when creating the final concept of the Platinum II -- a sophisticated,
minimalist design which reflects the user's surroundings."
The IDEA award is a testament to the products and concepts that
shape public understanding about the impact of industrial design
excellence on the quality of life. A jury of 17 world-renowned designers
and critics focused on five areas: design innovation, benefit to the
user, benefit to the client/business, ecological responsibility, and
appropriate aesthetics and appeal. All 148 winners with descriptions,
photos and contacts are featured on the IDSA web site (www.idsa.org),
and will also be showcased in IDSA's annual Yearbook of Industrial
Design Excellence, distributed internationally to business executives,
business schools, federal officials and designers.
