More Resources

This theme issue on Community-based Approaches to Resource and Environmental Management has arisen out of an interest of mine in promoting the publication of research results by post-graduate students, notably those who have worked overseas. The initial approach on doing such an issue was made to Bruce Mitchell who has much experience in international research as well as with M.A. and Ph.D. students. After discussion with Susan Wismer, whose research has focused at the community level in Canada and other countries, Bruce Mitchell recommended that he and Susan Wismer should jointly co-edit this volume.

Most of the highlights of the papers and their wider implications are discussed by Mitchell and Wismer, in their introduction. With one exception, the papers are all by current or former University of Waterloo students--in a number of cases with their faculty advisors. The exception is Geraldo Milioli, who completed his Ph.D. at a Brazilian university (co-supervised by a University of Waterloo professor) and who then studied at the University of Waterloo as a visiting scholar. The papers cover countries ranging from Indonesia through Brazil, Mexico and Guatemala to Greece. They also cover a range of approaches, theory, method and technique, ranging from remote sensing and GIS applications through policy and project impact assessment, metadisciplinarity and formal and informal interviews, including children, to participatory research and reflective scholarship.

The papers are rich individually and a bounty collectively. More attempts clearly should be made to encourage post-graduate researchers to publish their results and experiences for the benefits of their peers and society more generally.
