PowerDsine Ltd. (NASDAQ: PDSN), a pioneer in Power over Ethernet
(PoE) solutions, has unveiled its 3012 PoE Midspan. This Midspan is
designed specifically for the Small Medium Enterprise (SME) market,
where Wireless LAN (WLAN) adoption is increasing. The 3012 PoE Midspans
connect between Ethernet switches and powered devices, such as WLAN
access points, VoIP phones and network security cameras, to allow a
simple and cost-effective way for SMEs to deploy lower density
installations of these terminals.
The 3012 Midspan, which is the latest product to emerge from the
PowerDsine Midspan portfolio, is compliant with the IEEE 802.3af PoE
standard and also supports pre-standard terminals as well as legacy
Ethernet switches. The PowerDsine 3012 is different from other PoE
midspan solutions in the market because it is compact and it offers a
low price per port in this port density.
PoE Midspans enable SMEs to upgrade their existing Ethernet
switches, are easy to install and do not require any additional
infrastructure. They, therefore, reduce installation cost and enable
rapid deployment of new powered terminals without disruption to network
operation. Like all other PowerDsine midspans, with the 3012, there is
no need to replace the existing Ethernet switch when adding PoE
functionality to the network. In addition, the 3012 Midspan can operate
in conjunction with an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), and thus
distribute power to all powered terminals in the event of a power
outage.
In WLAN deployments, for example, the PowerDsine 3012 PoE Midspan
supports up to 12 access points, allowing IT managers to consolidate PoE
power distribution as they add more access points to their wireless
network. Traditionally, IT managers at small- to medium-sized businesses
utilized one-port power injectors as they expanded their PoE-enabled
wireless networks, but this inelegant solution creates a mess of wires
in the wiring closet. With the 3012 Midspan, IT managers can easily add
PoE-enabled wireless access points as their enterprise wireless network
grows.
"Wireless LAN installations that use PoE are being adopted
across all markets in part because they enable the supply of operating
power over Ethernet cabling to power devices that are situated in places
where it is awkward or uneconomical to install an AC outlet," said
Igal Rotem, CEO and co-founder of PowerDsine. "PowerDsine's
3012 Midspan is tailored to address the budgetary constraints of small-
to-medium-sized businesses that desire the flexibility to expand their
enterprise networks."
The 12-port 3012 PoE midspan is the latest member of
PowerDsine's 3000 Midspan family, which includes the one-port 3001
and the six-port 3006 Midspans. The PowerDsine 3012 PoE Midspan, which
is immediately available, is priced at $519 per unit.
About Power over Ethernet Technology
PoE is a technology for wired Ethernet, the most widely installed
local area network technology in use today. PoE allows the electrical
power necessary for the operation of each end-device to be carried by
data cables rather than by separate power cords. It minimizes the number
of wires that must be used in order to install the network, resulting in
lower cost, less downtime, easier maintenance and greater installation
flexibility.
