In addition to overload protection, high machine speeds can be
obtained by inserting a slip clutch into a machine system. The friction
surfaces developed for this clutch result in static friction being lower
than dynamic friction, thereby cushioning suddenly applied loads.
Tension on paper, wire film, thread, etc. is gradually applied and is
half that of a sudden load. The machine can then run much faster without
overloading the material. The machine is also cushioned against shock.
