Bluesocket, Inc., Burlington, Mass., a leader in open wireless
security and management solutions, has announced that America's
Center in St. Louis, Missouri has implemented a BlueSecure(TM) 2100
Controller to provide secure wireless access to the convention complex
for conventions, meetings, trade shows and sporting events.
America's Center features 502,000 contiguous square feet of
exhibit space in six halls, 83 meeting rooms, the 1,411 fixed-seat
Ferrara Theatre, the St. Louis Executive Conference Center for private
meetings, and The Edward Jones Dome, home to the St. Louis Rams and
other major sporting events and conventions. "The success of the
Center is dependent on the quality of the services we have
available," said Jack Canavera, Telecommunications Manager for
America's Center. "The need for wireless networking has
mushroomed. And, because the Center can host multiple events, there are
specific issues." America's Center was chosen to host a
national sporting event in April, and Canavera and his team of four were
notified that the organization wanted to offer wireless access to the
participants, as well as the attending media. "There are several
events going on at the same time during this event," said Canavera.
"There are the games, fan participation events and a convention at
the same time." The ability to have security levels defined down to
the specific access point -- free access for some locations and
password-secured access for others -- was critical for the solution. The
team turned to Verizon Select Services, Inc., their network services
provider who recommended Bluesocket.
"I didn't have time to test and look at a whole lot of
alternatives," Canavera said. "Now, as we've looked at
the capabilities of the Bluesocket Controller, we are patting ourselves
on the back for making the right decision." Utilizing
Bluesocket's Secure Mobility(R) technology for wireless data and
voice applications, BlueSecure Controllers provide high-performance,
reliable, policy-based WLAN security and management solutions that have
been deployed by thousands of large institutions, enterprises, and
public access providers. Verizon suggested that America's Center
work with River City Technology Group, a local systems integrator
specializing in designing and building wireless networks and user
training located in Clayton, Missouri for system integration. "It
was pretty straightforward," said Daryl Andershock, of River City.
"Once the network is ready to accept the BlueSecure Controller, it
takes about 30 minutes to set it up. We were up and running in about
three hours." The speed of implementation worked well for
America's Center. The system went live on March 9, 2005 and the
event was held April 2 - 4. "It really wasn't a pilot,"
said Jack Canavera. "It was installed and used. It had to work for
us on day one."
America's Center has 10 industry-standard access points in the
building for normal operation. They added APs for this event including
two for the press room, one for the digital photography operation, and
two for the floor of the Edward Jones Dome. Control of wireless services
access is an issue moving forward for America's Center, and one
that they will look to Bluesocket for assistance. The Center sells
access to networking services when conventions and other events are
held. They have wireless in various areas now, but not in the exhibit
halls. Before it is implemented in the 2006-2007 timeframe, the staff
needs to determine the revenue stream for wireless service. The team is
pleased with the BlueSecure Controller choice. "It's all been
pleasant surprises," said Canavera. "We keep coming up with
issues and the Controller seems to be able to handle everything. The
Bluesocket equipment gives us a comfort zone. It is also nice to be able
to go to management and assure them that what we bought is something
that we are going to be able to count on and expand in the future."
