In Brazil, no two bedfellows could be odder than the table-thumping
left-wing Workers Party (PT) and the expansionist capitalistic bank
Bradesco. But in an effort to make a little money for the struggling
socialists and even more for Brazil's largest private bank, the two
have combined to issue a Worker Party affinity card. The PT Visa card,
featuring the party's famed red star, is one for the party to raise
funds to make up for last year's money-losing presidential
campaign. The PT is at a low point after Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva blew
what looked like a sure-thing presidency for the party. With Brazilians
supporting Henrique Cardoso and his plans to adopt free-market economic
reforms, Lula and the PT are increasingly being seen as a thing of the
past.
