The Baker Hughes North American Rotary Rig Count is a calculation of the drilling rigs that are actively searching for or developing oil and natural gas throughout the United States and Canada.
In January 2006, the United States had 1,543 active rigs searching for or developing oil and natural gas, compared to just 1,256 rigs in January 2005. This growth in active rotary rigs suggests a 23 percent increase in the number of active rigs throughout the United States. In the period of one month, December 2005 to January 2006, the number of active rigs increased from 1,471 to 1,543.
There were 10 active rotary rigs in Alaska as of January 2006, compared to seven rigs just one year prior. In the period of one month, December 2005 to January 2006, the total number of active rigs remained constant at 10 active rotary rigs.
