The Mexican automobile sector is revving up. Jatco, a Japanese autoparts manufacturer, opened a US$300 million production facility in Aguascalientes, Mexico. The new plant will create 700 jobs and will serve Nissan and DaimlerChrysler's assembly plants in Mexico. Jatco will invest an additional $200 million raising capacity to handle increased business from the North American Free Trade Area. Toyota, a Japanese automobile maker, will invest $37 million expanding a production facility in Baja California, Mexico. Even the domestic companies are busy. Desc, a Mexican industrial conglomerate, created a subsidiary with CIE Automotive, a European auto parts company. Both companies will invest a combined $97 million in CIE Desc, which will cater to North American automobile markets.
