Alaska trends, an outline of significant statewide statistics, is provided by the University of Alaska Center for Economic Development and sponsored by American Fast Freight.
There was a gradual decrease in total building permit valuations in Anchorage during the month of April 2006, compared to year-ago figures. Combined residential and commercial permits were valued at $61 million in April 2006, compared with $75 million in April 2005. This represents a 19-permit total decrease over a one-year time period.
Comparing March 2006 to April 2006 also illustrates a decrease in total building permit valuations. The combined permits were valued at $61 million in April 2006, compared to $73 million in March 2006. This represents a 16-permit total decrease in just a single month's time.
Separating the permits into the individual categories of residential and commercial permits reveals the interesting statistic. Although the number of total permits decreased, valuations for residential building permits in Anchorage increased by 13 permits as commercial permits decreased by 41 permits over the past year. Residential permits increased from $30 million in April 2005 to $34 million in April 2006, while commercial permits decreased from $44 million to $26 million over the same time period. Thus, commercial and residential permit activity has experienced an approximately inverse relationship in Anchorage over the past year.
