The Baker Hughes North American Rotary Rig Count is a calculation of the drilling rigs that are actively searching for, or developing, oil and natural gas throughout the United States and Canada.
In June 2006, the United States had 1,666 active rigs searching for, or developing, oil and natural gas, compared to just 1,370 rigs in June 2005. This growth in active rotary rigs suggests a 22 percent increase in the number of active rigs throughout the United States.
In contrast, however, an opposite trend shows up during this time period in Alaska. There were eight active rotary rigs in Alaska as of June 2006, compared to 10 rigs just one year prior. In the period of one month, May 2006 to June 2006, the total number of active rigs decreased from nine to eight active rotary rigs.
