Valley Community for Recycling Solutions is running a capita) fundraising campaign to build a 30,000-square-foot recycling center-a 20,000-square-foot plant with 5,000 square feet for an education center and office space-in Palmer beside the central landfill on 49th State Street.
Planners said the facility will be built for certification as a "Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design"/LEEDs building and its design qualities may help keep the overhead down and demonstrate the efficiency of alternative energy and waste systems at work in a commercial building.
VCRS officials said the goal is to divert up to 25 percent of the wastes-tream from the central landfill to its facilities within five years of moving to the proposed new location.
VCRS recently had a booth at the 2006 Alaska State Fair.
