The 14th International Conference on the Management of
Technology: The International Association for the Management of
Technology (IAMOT): Vienna, May 22-26, 2005.
by Davenport, Sally
This year's IAMOT conference was supported by UNIDO, the
United Nations Industrial Development Organization, and was held at UNO
city, across the Danube from old Vienna. The conference dinner was held
in the spectacular Rathaus (City Hall), at which awards were made to the
50 'elite' MOT research institutions. The IAMOT conference
tends to very industryfocused and most of the keynotes speakers were
drawn from local industry or governmental organisations. It also has a
strong MOT education function and had one plenary session devoted to
this, including the possibility of setting up and accreditation system
for MOT programmes. Like the Triple Helix conference, IAMOT attracts
delegates from a great range of countries. However, as with last year,
there were a large number of 'no-shows' (more than 50% in some
sessions), which makes following your interests rather a lottery.
Hopefully this recurring problem will be addressed at next year's
conference to be held in Beijing (22-26 May, 2006), entitled 'East
Meets West', which is being very capably organised by Max von
Zedwitz of Tsinghua University. In addition, for those that don't
want to travel quite so far east, David Bennett, of Aston Business
School in Birmingham, will be hosting the second European IAMOT
conference (the first having been held there 11 years ago) from 10-12
September, 2006. More information about IAMOT and both conferences can
be found at www .iamot.org.
