A new computer program can help municipal power providers determine the costs of moving to "green" sources. The free Biopower Toolkit helps judge the feasibility of using biofuels--such as wood, animal waste, and landfill gases--to generate power. The toolkit developed by the Community Policy Analysis Center (CPAC) at the University of Missouri-Columbia, provides a customized analysis of the availability and prices of biofuels. It can help in decisions about whether biofuels would be a sound economic investment and help determine how much the use of biofuels could contribute to jobs and economic activity. It includes a biopower impact calculator to create an optimal mix of fuels and to predict revenue. There are three case studies included in the kit. The toolkit can be downloaded from CPAC's Web site (http://www.cpac.missouri.edu) or can be ordered on CD.
