Barr Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey, received FDA approval to sell Plan B (levonorgestrel) emergency contraceptive on an OTC basis to those 18 years of age and older. Marketed by the company's subsidiary, Duramed Pharmaceuticals, Inc., the contraceptive reduces the risk of pregnancy by 89% after a single act of unprotected sex if taken within 72 hours, according to the manufacturer. The drug is not be dispensed OTC to individuals 17 years of age or younger.
