Extreme Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ:EXTR), Santa Clara, Calif., has
announced a new series of its high performance Summit(R) Wireless
Mobility (WM) products, a modular Wireless LAN platform that boasts
unified security and management capabilities for high performance wired
and wireless networks.
The Summit WM-series switches combined with Altitude 350-2 Access
Points (APs) can provide an easy-to-manage, secure and scalable wireless
LAN solution for voice, video and data applications.
Enterprises require wireless LAN network technology that allows for
increased workforce mobility and seamless integration with the existing
network. But non-integrated wireless LAN systems present a significant
challenge to IT administrators that are tasked with managing and
securing those networks. Extreme Networks(R) Summit Wireless Mobility
product enables IT administrators to apply consistent security and
management policies across their entire wired and wireless network
through a single console.
"As wireless increasingly evolves towards a role as the
default access for many enterprise users, administrators need to
leverage existing policy and management frameworks to efficiently
deliver advanced mobility," said Craig Mathias, a Principal with
the wireless and mobile advisory firm Farpoint Group (Ashland, MA).
"Centrally managing both wired and wireless networks is the key to
providing lower total cost of ownership and in keeping the network
running reliably."
The Summit Wireless Mobility product offering includes the Summit
WM200 and Summit WM2000 switches. For smaller installations, the Summit
WM200 supports up to 50 APs in its baseline configuration with the
option to be upgraded to support 100 APs. The WM2000 switch can scale to
support large WLAN installations with capacities of up to 200 APs per
controller.
The Summit Wireless Mobility (WM) products offer a scalable
architecture to support a single roaming domain for tens of thousands of
users. In addition, it supports economical branch office deployments
where wireless user traffic can be bridged locally for better
performance and survivability. Compared to competitive WLAN solutions in
the market, the distributed capability of the Summit WM products will be
particularly beneficial for enabling scalable performance of large
numbers or with high-performing 802.11n access points.
For Extreme Networks customer Texas Christian University, the new
Summit WM platform provided a complete wireless solution for their
campus network. "We needed a wireless LAN solution that was simple
to deploy and operate, in addition to providing the level of security
that is required for our campus network," said Tony Fleming, senior
network engineer for Texas Christian University (TCU). "This latest
Summit WM series of products addresses our organization's need to
simplify the task of mobilizing our users without sacrificing security
or performance."
The Summit WM system allows the deployment of business-critical
applications with unified security policy management, efficient and
economical redundancy, and a reliable, serviceable modular architecture.
Consistent security policies are provided through integration with
Extreme Networks Network Access Control (NAC) solutions, including
Extreme Networks Sentriant(TM) AG appliance to provide consistent
captive portal web-based login and standards-based 802.1x.
The Summit WM is ideal for converged voice, video, and data
applications with highly-configurable end-to-end Quality of Service
(QoS) capabilities and support for 802.11e QoS standards such as Call
Admission Control (CAC) for client traffic management, QoS Basis Service
Set (QBSS) for intelligent client roaming, and Unscheduled Automatic
Power Save Delivery (U-APSD) for longer battery life. These build on
existing certifications from SpectraLink, Avaya, and Vocera.
Pricing and Availability
* The suggested list price begins at US $16,995 for the Summit
WM200 and US $32,995 for the Summit WM2000. * Summit WM200 and Summit
WM2000 switches will be available this quarter.
