Retail layoffs trigger anger.

by Doyle, Mona
The Shopper Report • May, 2007 •

The layoffs at Circuit City hit a shopper sore spot because they seemed "anti-shopper" or "consumer-be-damned," as well as unjust, short-sighted, and certain to degrade the shopping experience.

* "The Circuit City layoffs really smell bad and make me much less likely to go there."

* "I feel terrible for the Circuit City employees. What a reward for loyalty to your employer! The money saved will make nice bonuses for the CEO, President, etc., I'm sure. What kind of message does this send to young people entering the job market, or to consumers for that matter? I've found that the best places to shop are where employees are happy."

* "Retail layoffs are another failure for organized labor. Where's the retail clerks? This is why the AFL-CIO has fractured. They spend too much time and effort on politics instead of organizing companies such as Circuit City."

* "I'm sure the Circuit City layoffs will hurt their business since clerks are what keep the customers happy."

* "Big businesses are saying they care and then firing the hard-working people who take care of their customers! What a crock."
