India has been "jumping" into the Internet and mobile
game market and according to Salil Bhargava, CEO of Jump Games, it will
only get bigger.
"India has a market of 120 million handsets, and that number
is expected to grow to 500 million in five years with revenue increasing
five-fold. Right now we have two percent of the market but there is a
huge potential for growth as the younger generation goes mobile,"
said Bhargava, who started his career in the Internet with NBC in San
Francisco and later returned to India as development director for
India's largest Internet company, Rediff.com.
One of the five big gaming companies in India, Jump Games (which
changed its name from Paradox Studios last year) has created more than
120 mobile games across an array of genres and platforms--single and
multiplayer games for wireless, PC, Web, and allied platforms such as
PDA and iTM. Besides being affiliated with Sun's iForce initiative
and Forum Nokia PRO, the company has partnered with technology providers
like ICTV (HeadendWare), Intel, Sony Ericsson, Sun, Walt Disney India,
Pixiem and Conitec for its gaming initiatives. Distributed across the
U.S., Europe, South Africa, Australia, the Middle East and Asia, Jump
Games' production studio at Mumbai and Pune employs more than 160
people.
"The company is currently involved in developing cutting-edge
3D mobile games, multiplayer wireless games, including those involving
network-based technology like Session Initiation Protocol (SIP),
Location Based Services (LBS)-based, and Bluetooth-based games for
next-generation handsets," said Bhargava. "India is poised to
grow at a very fast pace in the wireless platform, as mobile in India is
what the PC is in the U.S."
