Alaska Wild has secured a partnership with the Anchorage Indoor Flag Football League (AIFFL), a recreational five-on-five noncontact league played at the Cellular One Sports Center in Anchorage.
The Alaska Wild, Alaska's first and only professional football team, will use the AIFFL to scout and develop local players interested in elevating to a professional level.
David Weatherholt, president of Alaska Professional Sports Inc., owner of the Alaska Wild, said the AIFFL consists of 12 teams, including two teams comprised of military personnel stationed at Fort Richardson and Elmendorf Air Force Base.
Rick Quattlebaum organized the AIFFL in 2004 with 48 players and four teams; in 2005 the league grew to six teams. "The biggest challenge for local athletes making it to the next level is the inability to play year-round in Alaska; this (AIFFL) partnership will fill this void and provide athletes an opportunity to work on football skills and foot-speed during the winter months and improve their chances," said Weatherholt.
