Council on Disabilities and Special Education.(Right Moves)(Inclusive Practice Award)(Brief article)

The Alaska Governor's Council on Disabilities and Special Education awarded its Inclusive Practice Award to Jennifer Schroeder, teacher of the Intensive Needs Special Education Class of Kilbuck Elementary School, Bethel.

The award recognizes educators who include parents as equal partners in their child's education; encourage student independence and inclusion in classroom and school activities; and advocate for the student with school staff and other students.

Schroeder has helped her students in countless ways, said Monica Prince, a third grade teacher at Kilbuck. She lobbied the school for a wheelchair lift and ramp, Prince said, and insists students with disabilities be included in all school activities. Schroeder encouraged one student with a disability to go out for the school's basketball team, and took time to cheer him on.
