The American Institute of Architects announced that local architect Harley Hightower was elevated to its prestigious "College of Fellows", an honor awarded to select members who have made contributions of national significance to the profession. This distinguished honor is conferred on architects with at least 10 years of membership in the AIA who have made significant contributions to the industry and to society through significant public service. Hightower is among 76 elected nationally to receive this honor because of his commitment to the profession. Among his many contributions, Hightower helped establish a School of Architecture at the University of Alaska and has held various positions at the university. In 1976, Hightower helped launch the Architectural and Engineering Department, founded in part to meet the urgent need of qualified technicians to supply a major building boom. He served as chair of the department from 1999 to 2004, and successfully lobbied the state to purchase the first AutoCad and Geographical Information System Laboratories, in which classes have been full with a waiting list.
