The John T Ryan Award is sponsored by Mine Safety Appliances Canada
Ltd. (MSA) to commemorate their company founder, John Ryan. Mr. Ryan
apparently worked with Thomas Edison to improve the electric light bulb
and battery and adapted them to portable use for underground miners.
The Award in his name was initiated in 1941 and is awarded annually
to the Canadian mine with the lowest injury rate per 200,000 hours
worked. In 1970, the Award was split into three categories--Metal Mines
(producing precious or base metals from underground operations); Coal
Mines; and Select Mines (all other mines including underground and open
pit operations and oil sands).
Nelson Wright, Safety and Training Manager at Mosaic Potash
Esterhazy K1 Mine, was on hand to accept the Award at ceremonies in
Montreal earlier this year.
"The John T Ryan Trophy is a figure of a 'working
man' (sleeves rolled up, lunch kit under his arm) coming home and
greeting his children," Wright commented.
"It is a wonderful visual statement about why we choose to
work as safely as possible. While it is very nice that our efforts are
recognized by our peers in the mining community, we understand that the
'true reward' for working safely is that everyone goes home to
their family at the end of the day," he continued.
"We were very pleased that the Mosaic Potash Esterhazy K1
operation received the John T Ryan National Award for 2006.
It takes the continuing daily efforts and focus of workers,
supervisors and management to achieve these outstanding results. My
thanks and congratulations to all those people who were involved."
