Pediatric radiology review. Pappas M, Yamamoto L, Anene O. 2006.
174 pgs. Humana Press Inc. www.humanapress.com. $71.55.
This book is, in simple terms, exactly what the title suggests--a
"review of pediatric x-rays." The content of this small,
brightly colored, hard-bound edition is presented cleverly as a series
of questions with explanations and many references. Each radiograph or
series of radiographs is prefaced with a thorough yet brief patient
clinical history, followed by several questions that are answered and
referenced at the end of the text. The text is divided into 6 chapters,
ranging from the chest, neck and abdominal areas to extremities to
computed tomography scans. As an added bonus, the package includes a
companion CD-ROM with an interactive version of the test questions.
This book primarily is intended to help medical students, residents
and clinicians recognize anatomic details on radiographic images in the
absence of a radiologist. The abundance, accuracy and quality of images
should achieve this goal. Another positive aspect of this text is the
availability of clinical history for patients, which helps the clinician
correlate information to make a sound diagnosis, interpretation or
treatment plan. Radiologic technologists practicing in either a
children's hospital or an outpatient pediatric practice also might
benefit from this book.
Although it is well written, easy to read, durable in construction
and deserving of a "thumbs up" for overall quality, I do not
recommend this book for the general radiologic technologist population
because of its specific focus on pediatric patients.
