The Nopal Group, Houston, Texas, a bioremediation environmental
services company, has received Railroad Commission of Texas, Oil and Gas
Division, approval for their BioKonversion technology for remediation of
hydrocarbon polluted soils. A key ingredient in Nopal's
BioKonversion technology is kenaf, a naturally oleophylic (oil
absorbing) species of the hibiscus.
In making the announcement, David A. Thomas, CEO of The Nopal
Group, stated that, "Although much of the world depends on the
production or the trade of oil to fuel its economies, these activities
cause severe damage to the environment. BioKonversion technology is both
economical and environmentally safe for remediating and renewing
hydrocarbon polluted lands and the hydrocarbon contaminated wastes
associated with onshore and offshore drilling."
Nopal's BioKonversion technology encapsulates the hydrocarbons
in contaminated soil and renders them non-detectible and non-leachable,
so that naturally occurring bacteria in the environment can break down
and consume the hydrocarbons in a short period of time.
Alternatively, through an extraction process, the salt water and
some of the hydrocarbons can be removed from the polluted soil and then
the BioKonversion process can be used to encapsulate the small amount of
hydrocarbons still remaining, allowing the naturally occurring bacteria
in the environment to quickly break down and consume the hydrocarbons.
"For too many years, drilling waste has been discarded in the
environment, left in pits or evaporation ponds at land-based operations,
and discharged to the sea at offshore operations," continued
Thomas. "Tougher disposal regulations are being prompted, and in
some cases mandated, in countries throughout the world by growing
concerns about the health and environmental impact of oil waste. We are
working to make BioKonversion technology available to these countries
that are desperately seeking to achieve their goals of clean water,
non-polluted land and recovery of increasingly scarce
hydrocarbons."
The Nopal Group is ready to accept and treat hydrocarbon
contaminated oilfield waste at their facility in Raymondville, Texas,
which has the capacity for an estimated 480 cubic yards, or 24 tank
trucks full of waste on a daily basis.

Nopal Resources is one such interest, specializing in the
remediation of hydrocarbon polluted soils derived from the drilling
industry's oil-based cuttings, muds, spills, and dumping. A green
technology, BioKonversionT is a proprietary process that offers a
complete, preventative solution to the environmental waste that is
created by the drilling, exploration and production industry.
